Postures are clearly demonstrated with precise use of language and specific instructions to develop the student’s understanding. Regular practice of Yoga increases awareness and brings emotional stability and inner peace.
BKS Iyengar
Yoga became popular in the West in large part through the teaching of B.K.S. Iyengar. He was born in 1918 into a large, poor family in a small village called Bellur in south India. Known to his students affectionately as ‘Guruji’, one who dispels darkness, he brought light and insight into the lives of millions of people throughout the world. He received honours from many countries and renowned Institutions and was named as one of the world’s top 100 most influential people by Time Magazine in 2004. He died in 2014. His method of learning Yoga is now the most widely practised in the world. The approach is clear, systematic, progressive and safe.
Dr Geeta S. Iyengar, eldest daughter of Yogacharya B. K. S. Iyengar was considered by her students to be the world’s leading female yoga teacher. Geetaji adapted her father’s method of yoga to the specific requirements of women. Specific asanas, pranayama and sequences are given for different stages in a woman’s life including menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. She died in 2018.
Mr Iyengar’s son, Prashant, and grand daughter, Abhijata, continue to lead the Iyengar community.
